It took Maugham 7 years before he found a publisher for this book, although by that time he was already dissatisfied of how Heinemann handled the promotion of his books.

Years later, Maugham commented on his puerile attempt to describe the sensations that Spain left him, a place that continued to absorb him for the rest of his life. He went back to write about Spain in Don Fernando, a mature effort in capturing the country, its people, and its literature. And his last novel Catalina sets in Spain during its Golden Age.

Though more well-known as Ford Madox Ford's lover, Violet Hunt was Maugham's for a period, and they parted friends. It has been pointed out that she was the model for Norah Nesbit in Of Human Bondage. In 1908, Hunt dedicated her most successful novel White Rose and Weary Leaf to Maugham. Alec Waugh commented on Maugham's kindness to Hunt at a party when Hunt was down and out, in 1922.
